Term 2, Week 4

We are deep into our projects for this block of learning. In groups the challenge was set to invent one thing to make the world a better place.  We have been busy developing, design and re-designing these inventions.
So how do robots help people? Reading about robot doctors.
Finding background information for our projects
Creating our own comic strips, practicing spelling & achievements in guitar
Fitness Time
From the garden to table
We planted kumera at the end of last term.  When we checked it this week, the plant had died off and the kumera were ready to be harvested.  We then dug up the kumera, washed, cut and baked them in the oven.  Everyone tried them...yum!

Term 2, Week 3

Hello Everyone,

This week we had the privilege of watching Learning Common 3's Trash to Fashion show. We loved their costumes and some of our students are hoping to get involved in this project next year. Well done to the students in LC3 who designed, created and modelled these amazing outfits.

Below is an image of some of the apps we use in LC2. If you click on the image you will be taken to our LC2 learning hub site where this page is interactive. You will be able to click on the app images and this will lead you to the iTunes store.

Term 2 Week 2

This week we have been busy planning and running workshops.  We have been teaching others how to play touch, sketch, sew, use go carts, create origami, Hip Hop dancing and make goo for kitchen science.

We have also been working hard on our projects. Some of us have attended a workshop run by Ria in LC3 around using Mindstorm to program robots.

We have also been privileged to have Owen teach us sign language this week for New Zealand Sign Language week.  We learnt how to say good morning, lunch and the alphabet among other things.

Term 2, Week 1

Hi Everyone,

We have had a busy beginning to the term, with lots of experts sharing their skills and expertise with us.

We had Constable Lorena come in to teach us road safety and bike and scooter safety.

Tiffany Singh come in to run a community art project with all of our students. This featured wind chimes and will be located in the park near our school (our students call it the Acorn Park) and will change each season so keep an eye out for this amazing art.

We finished our first week back with a visit to the Secondary school to see how their awesome school could help us with our projects. We went to their library to talk to Georgi and Leigh about our project topics then broke into our project groups to talk to Steve about robotics or Pete about cooking and restaurants.

Term 1, Week 10

Hi Everyone,

We've had another busy week in LC2. We have started our collaborative projects which relate to our inventive thinking immersion, so make sure you ask your child what their project is about.

We've enjoyed sharing our learning journey with you during our IEMs, as well as goals and celebrations.

Our students have started running the workshops they have been busy planning. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to share their skills with others.

 Tate's Block Workshop

 Owen's Sign Language Workshop

During our trip to The Mind Lab we got to use a MaKey MaKey kit to create circuits and programme our own sound effects using the programme Scratch on the computer.
Using touch pads, everyday objects are transformed into the keys from the keyboard.

On Tuesday we had our first sports sessions run by the Hobsonville Point Secondary School students. Our students are involved in different sports at this time, including soccer, hockey, netball, rugby, cricket and basketball.

Term 1, Week 9

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to those of you who came along to support Learning Common 3's Market Day on Wednesday. It was a huge success. The money they raised will go towards their education outside the classroom activities. They learnt a lot about managing projects, people and money. Your support was very much appreciated. Thank you.

Our singing group with Julia
Before the market day, Learning Common 1 joined us in our common for some cross-common activities. It was a great opportunity for our students to get to know each other a little better.

Some of our students have made videos of their Mind Lab reflections. Click the image below to see the videos on our LC2 Learning Hub site.

Term 1, Week 8

Hi Everyone,

We have had an awesome week this week! Our trip to The Mind Lab on Monday was fantastic, we did some design thinking using electronics and robotics.
We created our own sound effects, recorded them, and then played them through a computer by making electronic circuits.
We also designed and made a rodent trap with a robotic opening and closing door. We connected the motherboard, batteries, sensor and motor ourselves.

The second round of Friday workshops are in full swing and lots of our students challenged themselves to have a go at something new this time which is great. There are a few workshops being offered for the first time, like ballroom dancing, trash to fashion and gymnastics, which the students are really enjoying.

We have also updated our Learning Journey Wall and have enjoyed seeing the LC2 students share this space with each other their families.

Term 1, Week 7

Hi Everyone,

This week we wanted to share our learning journey wall with you.

We use this space to share our learning throughout the term. In this area you can find information about our common, our planning and photos of what we have been learning. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, or want to ask questions about our learning journey, please do.

One of our inquiry immersion activities has been hand sewing/embroidery. This was an opt-in workshop where students drew a design and then learnt how to stitch the outline to produce a piece of sewing that they can then turn into something of their choice; framed art, a pillow etc. They have done an awesome job!

Term 1, Week 6

Hi Everyone,

This week marked the start of our swimming lessons at The Swim Centre. These lessons are an awesome opportunity for the kids to not only learn to swim and gain confidence in the water, but also to experience risk taking and success in a new way.

This week the students in LC2 had a range of different workshops they could opt into. Stop motion animation, art and hand sewing are a few examples of some new learning our students have been involved in. Get them to share these experiences with you. Their animations are available for you to see on our school iPads if your child would like to share theirs with you.

In Learning Common 2 we are not having a signing book to record nightly reading but if you would like to keep a record at home, you are welcome to use this form to help you keep track.
If you are unable to drag the template to your desktop or save the image, please email Erin or Amy to get a copy.

Here are a few more photos from our week:

Term 1, Week 5

Hello Everyone!

Thanks to those of you who attended our parent info evening this week. It was so nice to meet family members we hadn't met yet, see familiar faces and chat about the learning we have been doing in LC2. If you have any unanswered questions, please feel free to pop in or flick us an email.

We have a few digital tools for our sharing our learning.

This blog is for families to have a weekly update of what we have been doing each week.

Our planning site is where we share our planning with the students in our common. This is what they use to plan their own day of learning.

Our Learning Common 2 site is where we share resources and information that support your child's learning. There are links to literacy and numeracy websites as well as information about digital citizenship and other bits and pieces that relate to what is happening in our common.

Here are some photos from the Secondary School's opening ceremony on Monday morning.

Term 1, Week 4

We have had a great week in Learning Common 2. Check out what we have been up to.

If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place...
Our focus for this term is relating to Inventive Thinking.  We have been busy inventing different creations.  Some of us read 'The Toy House', then built a structure using cardboard.  We have also begun creating our outdoor space, by planting flowers in planters outside our learning common.

Measurement
In Maths, we are beginning our Measurement investigation. We had a great time trying to find out how heavy objects are (including ourselves).

Construction
Some of us have been busy creating structures to live in.  Reading 'Making a Toy House', was helpful as it gave us tips on how to construct structures out of cardboard.

Visitors
This week we have had a book fair in the Library.  This has been a great success, with some great titles on offer for people to buy.  We have also had two authors in to inspire us to create stories of our own.
Julie Scott shared her series about Milly and the Chittens and Stephanie Thatcher shared her story 'The Quiet Pirate'.  We loved reading their stories in the learning common.
P.E. & Fitness
We are also discussing ways to promote healthy living. We have been using the playground for circuit training. We are still getting to know each other, so team building activities have been a great way to get to know one another.
