Christmas Tunes, Performance Prep, and a Sad Goodbye.

This week we sadly farewelled Keeley and her family as they left Auckland to embark on a new adventure elsewhere. All the best to you and your family Keeley!!!

We have been doing a bit of singing in class, including the National Anthem and of course some Christmas carols...

PINs and Show work

Week 5 was another crazy week. The kids are preparing some great PINs workshops these days and the conversations they've been having to support each other and provide constructive criticism for our performance work has definitely moved up a notch. The following are snapshots of the week in LC2.

One week down

This has been an awesome week! We had lots going on in LC2 and had the opportunity to reflect on just how far our students had come since the start of the year. Here are a few of our highlights.

We've also made a great start on our performance for the end of the year - Elizabeth has been holding auditions for the acting parts so watch this space!

While auditions have been underway we have also been storyboarding our script so that we can work out the costumes, set, stage directions and props. These photos are from that session.

Farewell Lucas!!!

Lucas has been with us for a long time, and this week we said farewell to him and his family as they embark on a new adventure!

Te Wiki o te Te Reo Maori!

This week our Te Reo exploration led us to talk about feelings...

We had a go at writing and saying how we feel in Te Reo.

We also explored these during drama and had a go at using our facial expression to show an emotion.

Karekare and Bethells Community Event

On Wednesday afternoon after much organisation and preperation on the part of the Karekare and Bethalls Community leaders, our schools first community event was held.

The leaders had organised a bunch of games and competitions for the community members to take part in including an egg and spoon race, and a three legged race, among others.

When our LC2 members returned from this event their faces were glowing from the fun and the sense of belonging that they had experienced through this event. Michaella even led our LC2 Bethalls members in sharing their community chant with our class!

We look forward to more events like this being held, this time for all of our five communities.

Setting Descriptions

Our focus for Writing this term is Narrative.  So far we have looked at character descriptions and are now focussing on writing descriptions of our story settings. 

Below is a selection of our writing -

There is someone at the door.  I hear a growl.  It's a wolf.  A light comes on in the background.  Slime covers the house.  BANG!!!! on the door.  Someone is staring in the dark.  A face on a log.  The face on the log is the big bad wolf!

In the forest you can hear nothing except the river splashing.  The windows of a small stone cottage are glowing like the beautiful sea.  The growing flowers are like soft silk.

One sunny day the water was still.  There was a beautiful castle and a stunning bridge over the water.  The colour of the castle was white, green and pink.  The gardens were immaculate.  The birds were singing by the castle.  They sounded as smooth as silk.
Olivia

The water was flowing down and splashing along the river.  The shiny rocks were floating down the river too.  The birds were singing in the sky that was as blue as the ocean.  The sun was shining down brightly.

In a place far away there was a patch of grass.  There were two tall trees. Suddenly one fell down while the other stood still.  A red bird landed on the highest branch.

On a sunny day an island from the middle of the ocean went UP UP UP UP UP to the clouds.....

On a sunny day the birds were chirping and the wind was blowing.  It just looked beautiful.  All the animals were happy to be here.  It was a gorgeous day and the water was glowing.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful and colourful castle on a bright, glowing hill with a wonderful rainbow.  There was a graceful white swan swimming on the lake in the sun.

Night was coming.  The river was freezing.  Trees were dying.  A boat was leaving.  It was dark under the bridge.  The rocks were surrounding the river.   The lights are on but no one is home.  There is a forest behind the house. Suddenly a shadow comes creeping out of the forest......

In a forest far, far away there was a single bird on a tree.  The water was smooth.  All of a sudden a tree started to tumble....  Suddenly a huge robot came out of nowhere.....

The night was falling, the stars were shining.  A boat was coming to the cottage. The air fell still.  The only sound was the water splashing on the rocks.

I see a river with yellow lights hanging from the trees.  There is a stone bridge over the river.  I can hear the trees shaking in the wind.

It is dark.  No one lives here.  Suddenly there was a big bang!  The big bang went on for ages.  Bang!  Bang!  Bang!  The noise went on.  There is a face in the window......

One night, one house in the forest.  The opening of night time.  Next to the house there were a lot of trees and a river.  The leaves of the trees were like rainbows.

The wind was loud.  The trees were broken.  Houses were in the shadows.  The lights went off.  The trees are on the ground.  There is a river with a wooden bridge over it.  There are no clouds in the sky.  Bang!......

A Busy Week In LC2

It has certainly been a busy week of learning in LC2!  Our projects are well under way.  Check out what a couple of the project groups have been up to below.

Solar System Group
This project group were lucky enough to go on a visit to the Stardome on Monday.  We went armed with lots of questions we were keen to find the answers to!  We spent some time in a workshop, finding out facts about the Sun, Moon and Earth.  We also found out lots of information about all of the other planets in our Solar System.  We did a really fun quiz on iPads, searching for answers in the different galleries at the Stardome.  We ended our time in the Planetarium watching a short feature about a family of aliens looking for the perfect holiday destination in the Solar System.

 

 

 

 

The Human Body Group

The Human Body project group welcomed two experts this week.  Firstly. Christian's Mum who is a nurse.  We had all prepared a question for her to answer.  These ranged from 'How does bacteria get into the human body?' to 'What does the liver do?'  From 'How is our food turned into energy for the body to use?' to 'How do the kidneys work and what do they do?'  We all got great answers to our questions and Dannii told us in a way we could understand! Then came the best part!!  Hearts, livers and kidneys!!!!!  Not human ones but ones from animals!  We got to put on some gloves and hold them!  At first we were a little bit apprehensive but the nerves soon went away!

 

 

 

 

 

 

We also got to listen to Mason's heart beating using a real stethoscope.  

 

 

Our second expert was Sarah, Isla's Mum, who is a scientist.  We also bombarded her with lots of questions which she answered amazingly!  We looked at different types of medicines and what they are used for - medicines that we breath in, medicines that we put on our bodies like creams and lotions, medicines that come in liquid and tablet form.
